Ben Tre: VND 13.7 billion for the poverty fund

During the charity campaign "Day for the Poor" of 2005 held last month by the Ben Tre's National Front Committee, more than VND 5.5 billion of donations were contributed to the Poverty Fund. Those donations came from staffs and officials of government and private agencies, organizations, and individuals inside and outside the province.

On this occasion, the "Day for the Poor" campaign organizers have earmarked VND 5.3 billion for a charity program to build 26 houses of gratitude, 665 "houses of love", repair 101 slum houses for poor people, and provide free health examination and capital assistance for household business developments.

In the past 5 years, the province's Poverty Fund has received totally VND 13.7 billion of charity contributions from various sources, and the Fund has used the charity money to build 37 houses of gratitude and 1,980 "houses of love", and repair 440 slum houses for poor households. It also used the money to assist tens of thousands of poor people to overcome difficulties and improve their livelihood. Thanks to the movement, most of Ben Tre's poor households with housing difficulties have so far been sharply reduced.
