Ben Tre Town to be Recognized as City by 2010

In the morning of Sept 1,
2007, Ben Tre Township, Ben Tre Province, was recognized as the Class III
municipality at a Decision issued by the Central Gorvernment – a buffet step
toward the city status that it has so far been eager to gain.

The recognization decision
was announced during a ceremony to celebrate the 62nd Independence
Day of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam. It was the Decision No 1081/QD-BXD
signed on August 9, 2007, by the Minister of Construction thereby to recognize
Ben Tre Township as Class III municipality.

Ben Tre Township has been
strived for the Class III municipality since 2002. During the 5-year
whole-hearted working, it has achieved almost all of the criteria of the
recognization. It gained 8.5/100 points over the benchmark 70/100 points for a
recognization.

Ben Tre township has scored
most points on criteria such as infrastructural upgrading and expanding;
increase of personal incomes and living standards; lowering of the poverty rate,
at the moment is at 3.29%, the lowest of the province.

Also at announcement
ceremony, the provincial leadership called on the Township people and all forces
to continue their efforts to make Ben Tre Township a provincial city by 2010.
