World Bank delegation in Ben Tre for reality check

On April 27, 2008, representatives from the World Bank led by Ms Eija Pehu, Senior Adviser in the World Bank's Agriculture and Rural Development Department, came to Ben Tre on a visiting and working tour here.

The delegation visited and worked with Ben Tre Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province's Women Association, Ben Tre Forest and Aquatic Import Export company (Faquimex), the Aquatic Cooperative of Rang Dong (Thoi Thuan Commune, Binh Dai District), the Viet Tien Pte in Chau Hung, the fish farm owned by Ms Pham Thi Van in Thanh Tri, the fish depot owned by Ms Cuc in Binh Thang, the Center for tigerprawn breeding owned by the Huy Thuan Aquatic Consulting limited company in Thua Duc (Binh Dai District).

At each stop of the tour, the delegation carried out mini reality surveillances on local women's role in the development of aquatic culturing business, including such criteria as work conditions and environment, the ratio of female employees in enterprises, their incomes, advantages and disadvantages, their technical needs and demand of financial compensations for daily working. These items of data are collected and used as background information for the bank's policy making and project development process in combination with poverty reduction strategies in aquatic culturing in Viet Nam, and particularly in Ben Tre.
