Ben Tre Red Cross raising more than VND111 million to aid disaster victims in Myanmar and China

After news of natural disasters in Myanmar and China spread around the world, Ben Tre Red Cross, in responding to the call by the Vietnamese Committee of the Red Cross, sent appeal to local people across the province to raise money for relief aid to the natural disaster victims. On May 4, cyclone Nargis swept through Myanmar killing nearly 100,000. Then more than a week later, on May 12, an 8-Richter strong earthquake shook the Chinese Southwestern province of Sichuan killing 62,664 and injuring 247,683.

Since its appeal, the provincial Red Cross has received lots of contributions from districts and departments and sectors of the province. Districts such as Binh Dai, Ba Tri, Mo Cay, Chau Thanh and the Ben Tre City contributed VND50 million to the provincial Red Cross aid fund, while provincial departments and sectors raised more than VND61.5 million. The provincial Red Cross then transferred the raised money to the Vietnamese Committee of the Red Cross so that it can be merged into the national aid fund to be sent directly to the disaster victims.
