Number of telephone subscribers per 100 population on the increase thanks to mobile phone boom
Ben Tre province may have achieved 42.4 telephone subscribers per 100 population by the end of this year, according to the Dong Khoi newspaper. The number of telephone subscribers includes 15.9 fixed lines and 26.5 mobile phone subscribers.
Meanwhile, the number of internet users is still modest and stands at 3.57 users per 100 population. This is also disproportionately distributed in various areas, concentrating mainly in urban areas while scattering sparsely in suburban and rural areas.
All post services and telecom and internet services are expanding rapidly and on a daily basis. The province now has 7 services providers of this kind, namely Ben Tre Telecom, Ben Tre Post Office, and the local branches of the military-controlled Viettel Telecom, the EVN Telecom, MobiFone, S-Fone and Ha Noi Telecom. Among them, the Ben Tre Post Office is currently commanding the largest post services market share with a network of branches and agencies casting all over the province. Otherwise, Ben Tre Telecom is the one to control almost all of the province's network infrastructure.
In its planning for future development of the telecom and internet services sector, Ben Tre's Department of Information and Communication (DIC) is actively pushing forward a program to alleviate the illiteracy of information among the population in poorest and most remote areas, while keeping on to improve the general quality of telecom products across the province.
