Ben Tre commemorates old-time intellectual and mandarin Phan Thanh Gian

In the morning of August 5, 2008, in commemoration of Phan Thanh Gian - a great intellectual and mandarin under the Nguyen Dynasty - the People's Committee of Ba Tri District and Phan's relatives and descendants held the 141st anniversary of his death. The ceremony had the presence of Ms Nguyen Thi Thanh Ha and Mr Vo Thanh Hao - Vice Chairpersons of Ben Tre People's Committee, joined by representatives of department, sectors and organizations based in the province.

Phan Thanh Gian was born on December 12 in the year of Dragon (1796) in what is now Bao Thanh Commune, Ba Tri District, Ben Tre Province. His parents were very poor when he was born. His mother died when his was very young. He was an intelligent and studious pupil of the old time. In 1825, he attended the Huong examination in Gia Dinh Province(now is Ho Chi Minh City) and achieved the Bachelor degree. The following year (1826), he went on to attended the Hoi examination in the Capital of Hue and achieved the doctorate, thus becoming the first ever doctorate holder in the Indochine. After that, he was a mandarin under three Kings of the Nguyen Dynasty. He was well-known for his honesty and was admired and highly respected by all of his people. He passed away on the 5 of the 7th Lunar month of the year of Pig (1867).
