Macau, a potential labour market for Vietnamese labourers

On June 9, 2009, the Dong Khoi Vocational Training College's Job Introduction Center collaborated with Forward, a Taiwan-based company, to hold a seminar for career consultancy and introduction of the labour market in Macau Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. The seminar was attended by dozens of the college's trainers and trainees.

At the seminar, Forward's representative introduced summarily about the land and the people of Macau SAR, the Macanese daily living, their traits and hobbies, and in particular the labour environment in Macau. At present, Macau is in shortage of workers mainly in areas such as services and housewife jobs. Basic salaries for workers in these areas are about MOP2,500 per month (or VND5.5 million). Sundays work is paid MOP100 each (or VND220,000).

For workers in the services area, the salaries may vary between MOP3,900 and 4,900 per month (or VND7.8 million to VND9.8 million). Total charges for each labour to work in Macau are US$1,700, and the workers themselves have to deposit MOP2,000 out of their monthly salary for the first three months of their working contract.

Macau is a potential market for Vietnamese labour force. It requires no high standards of worksmanship, workers' ages, low procedure charges. Most important is that Macau has put into force the law to protect domestic as well as foreign workers. Also, if doing the good job, workers may be awarded with a pay rise after 3 to 6 months and a good chance to renewed the labour contract.
