A French Doctor in Ben Tre

The French-Vietnamese Cultural Society in Perpignan city, Southern France, chaired by Ms Nguyen Thi That (That Pen), a Ben Tre native, is one of the expat Vietnamese organizations in France that has been steering humanitarian works back to the homeland.

The Society’s main function is to introduce Vietnamese culture to friends in France and other European countries. Their humanitarian works include helping poor households in Ben Tre with small funds to do their private business; and to introduce volunteer doctors to Ben Tre to provide free health care for poor patients at the charitable health clinic.

Through the introduction of the Society, doctor Pierre Jien Lecler and his wife voluntarily came to Ben Tre in a trip to provide free health care for nearly 200 poor patients, a greater part of them with cardiovascular diseases. Thanks to doctor Lecler’s work, serious cases has been diagnosed and sent to the main hospital for timely surgery.

Severe and complicated cases were also introduced to the France-Vietnam hospital in Ho Chi Minh for proper treatment.

Every day, doctor Lecler does his work in the morning, giving health examination for about 10 to 15 patients. There are times with great number of patients and the work has to be lasting til afternoon. But the doctor seems unswayed and keeps on working with full passion.

For her own activities, Mrs Lecler, an expert on the deaf-and-dumb language, came to the Disabled Children Nursery School for talks about how-tos in disabled chidren nursery. She showed her pleasure at what she saw here.

The Leclers also visited poor households in Vinh Thanh Commune, Cho Lach District. These households had been financially assisted by the Society to do their small household business.

The Leclers were praised by the province leadership for their voluntary works, and were also awarded with campaign medals.

While in Ben Tre, the Leclers  stay and do their volunteering work at their own expenses, but they said they feel good like at their own home. They promised to introduce more voluntary doctors to come to Ben Tre to help poor patients here.
