Overview - History

As far back as early 17th century, the Ben Tre region was a completely wild land with marshes and woods intermingled with a grid of ditches and rivulets. Then, waves of migration throughout 17th and 18th centuries had been gradually forming the most fundamental basis for later developments of Ben Tre province.

Vo Truong Toan (? - 1792): There was always a mystery surrounding Vo Truong Toan's date and place of birth. It was just known to many that he was once living and teaching in Binh Duong District, Tan Binh Prefect, Gia Dinh Province. In his age, he was renowned as a talented and learned personality with broad and profound knowledge in many fields of study.

Truong Vinh Ky (1837- 1898)

Truong Vinh Ky (1837- 1898), also called J.B. Truong Chanh Ky, or Petrus Ky, was born on December 6, 1837 in Vinh Thanh Village, Minh Ly Canton, Tan Minh District, Vinh Long Province (now is Vinh Thanh Commune, Cho Lach District, Ben Tre Province). His father was Commander Truong Chanh Thi, his mother was Nguyen Thi Chau. He started to learn the Mandarin language at as early as 5 years of age. When he was 9, he lost his father.

Suong Nguyet Anh (1864-1921)

Suong Nguyet Anh (1864-1921): Suong Nguyet Anh is the penname. Her real name is Nguyen Thi Ngoc Khue (or Nguyen Thi Xuan Khue). The daughter of the well-known patriotic teacher-poet Nguyen Dinh Chieu, she was born in 1864 (on the 1st of the Second Lunar month of Giap Ti - the year of the Mouse) in An Binh Dong (now is An Duc Commune, Ba Tri District), born the fourth of 7 children. Inherited the moral integrity from her father, Ngoc Khue had shown early signs of talent and personality since a very young girl.

Phan Van Tri (1830 - 1910)

Phan Van Tri (1830 - 1910): Phan Van Tri was a poet and a literary author, born in 1830 in Bao An District,Vinh Long Province, now is Thanh Phu Dong Commune, Giong Trom District,Ben Tre Province, son of Phan Van Tan, who was a chief housekeeper of the Governor Palace. Nine generations of his family were banned by the Nguyen Dynasty from being civil servant official. His father also was a military leader under Nguyen Anh to fight against the Tay Son forces. His wife was also born from a family of intellectuals. In 1849, the Ky Dau Lunar year under Tu Duc Dynasty, he achieved the Bachelor degree at the Gia Dinh syndicate school, in the same course with Nguyen Thong, another patriotic intellectual.

Phan Thanh Gian (1796-1867)

Phan Thanh Gian (1796-1867): Phan Thanh Gian, nicknames Dam Ba, Dam Nhu, Luong Khe, Mai Xuyen, born on the 12th day of the 10th month of the Lunar year of Dragon, or 1796, in Tan Thanh Village, Vinh Binh District, Dinh Vien Prefect, Vinh Long Province, now is Bao Thanh Commune, Ba Tri District, Ben Tre Province.

Nguyen Thi Dinh (1920 - 1992)

Nguyen Thi Dinh (1920 - 1992): Born in 1920, in Luong Hoa Commune, Giong Trom District, Ben Tre Province. Intimately called Ba Dinh (Ba is understood as Three, indicating her birth order in the family). As an adolescent girl, Ba Dinh got to know of the patriotic movement in her birth district. At 16, she joined in the local movement to fight for civil welfare and democracy. In 1938, at 18, she became a member of the Indochine Communist Party.

Nguyen Ngoc Thang (? - 1866)

Nguyen Ngoc Thang (? - 1866) was born into a farmer family in Giong Keo Hamlet, My Thanh Village, Tan An District, now is My Thanh Commune, Giong Trom District, Ben Tre Province. He was the eldest son of four children of Mr Nguyen Cong and Mrs Tran Thi Kiem, born before the French came. In 1848, Thang joined the Royal Army and was promoted to the position of Millitary Commander.
